We can always count on Demi Lovato to keep things 100% real. Throughout the past few years, the 24-year-old has been open about her body issues and mental health, including her struggles with eating disorders, addiction and bipolar disorder. It definitely isn’t a small feat for an international celebrity like her. Although she is very much open about these topics, she shares that she doesn’t want to be solely defined by them.
In a recent interview with iHeartRadio’s Label Defiers podcast, Lovato talked about the public’s fixation with her mental disorder and how she is obviously much more than this condition. On this topic, she shares “I think when people refer to me as being bipolar, it’s something that’s true–I am bipolar–but I don’t like people to use it as a label. It’s something that I have. It’s not who I am”.
Lovato’s statement already says a lot about mental health–conditions still come with a stigma because they’re not as openly talked about. The star, however, is determined to turn things around. “I think it’s very important that people raise the importance of mental health because it’s something that’s so taboo to talk about,” Lovato said. “The more people know about it, the more people are going to be able to find solutions to what they’re going through”. She shares that one thing that greatly helps her is switching to a healthier lifestyle and practicing body positivity.
Hopefully, Lovato’s passion to de-stigmatize her condition (as well as other mental health disorders) inspires others to do the same.I rarely post pics with my belly button showing because I’m normally insecure about showing my full stomach but I’ve been working really hard and thanks to @d.leith and his yummy food with @lockhartandleith I’ve been seeing progress so I thought I’d post this cause I’m feeling myself right now!! ????? also can’t forget the best gym in the world @unbreakableperformance and my trainers @fatenginethatdoes & @itskimglass ?
