Demi Lovato is one strong individual who has always been open about her experiences with anorexia and bulimia. For the first time, the 25-year-old posted a before and after photo that reveals her struggle with the illnesses.
Labeled “Then” and “Now,” the photo shows us two shots–the leftmost showing us a skinny version of Lovato in the midst of struggling with the eating disorder, and the other showing us that she is on the road to recovery. “Recovery is possible,” she writes on her Instagram post.
Lovato posted the photo a day before the debut of her YouTube documentary where she further discusses her eating disorders. In the film, she shared that it is something she was battling with ever since she discovered the therapeutic effects of food as a child: “I would bake cookies for my family and I would eat all of them and nobody would have any to eat,” she said, adding, “That was my first memory of food being a medicine for me.”
The star shares that food is the biggest challenge in her life, saying, “I don’t want to give it the power to say it controls my every thought, but it’s something that I’m constantly thinking about.”
While she is in a much better place now, Lovato understands that having an eating disorder may be a lifelong process. Now, what matters to her is becoming stronger and healthier–something we should all strive for.
