From Rousteing to Lagerfeld, here’s how to land a coveted spot in a designer squad

Yes. Like a force that just won’t quit, the term squad
ingrained into the millenial dictionary—even after its predicted demise in 2016. After all, how could we forget the word that virtually rings synonymous to Taylor Swift’s name? But while the pop songstress and her star-studded circle of friends are the most frequent patrons of this enduring buzzword, they aren’t the only ones. It’s no surprise that everyone else, including the creative directors heading our favorite design houses, have followed suit.
Two months ago, we dissected the foundation of Alexander Wang’s Spring 2016 ad campaign: his ineffably cool #WangSquad
. Here, we take the high fashion squad study a little further, rounding up some of fashion’s most impactful designer squads (and dropping a few pointers to help you become a part of them.)
BALMAIN: COP A-LIST STATUS
With the Kardashian, Jenner and Hadid sisters as fixed figures in his circle, Olivier Rousteing undoubtedly wields a powerful weapon in the realms of fashion and fame. Joined by other big players like Rihanna, Joan Smalls and Jourdan Dunn, this distinguished group is tied together by their top-tier stardom just as much as Rousteing’s modern vision and Balmain’s signature structure and embellishment. The sharp-featured creative director’s next target: Zayn Malik, whose repute flawlessly fits the bill.
CHANEL: CHANNEL YOUR INNER ANTI-MODEL
Karl Lagerfeld is a little bit of a mystery, what with his snowy locks, trademark suits and a pair of black sunglasses perpetually plastered on his face. This perplexing edge translates just as well when it comes to his choice of muses. While Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid–both superlatives in the contemporary modeling scene–are undoubtedly mainstays on the Chanel runways, Karl has an evident soft spot for the eccentric anti-model. Stoicism and quirks of all sorts are considered plusses for the 82-year-old icon. Case in point: gap-toothed beauty Lara Stone, the angel-faced and level-headed Lily Rose Depp, Big Bang leader and eternal “it” boy G-Dragon and Rita Ora, Britain’s bleach-blonde bombshell.
SAINT LAURENT: CRAWL INTO VACCARELLO’S HEART
Changes are underway at Saint Laurent with a new creative director in charge. While Hedi Slimane shed a light on kids kissed by the rock n’ roll gods during his time at the helm of the maison, we predict that Anthony Vaccarello’s entrance will usher in a swap of muses for the French fashion house. Our reinvented Saint Laurent squad forecast features none other than Vaccarello’s loyal model muses: Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss and Anja Rubik–whose face was emblazoned across pieces in his Spring 2016 collection.
