Just recently, she launched AVANTgarden, an Instagram-only magazine that the artist describes as “part magic, part memoir.” The ten-page publication has been designed specifically for the layout of Instagram, where one can make use of the application’s sliding feature.
However, the most important thing about this launch is its message, with its inaugural issue titled “ROOTS. SHOCK. BEAUTY.” The subject is something close to FKA Twigs’ heart–the creativity and heritage of braided hairstyles.
In the magazine, there is a wide range of faces with different hairstyles, each photographed and framed to refer to the imagery seen in black barbershops. Accompanying the images are playful texts such as “They locked her in a cage full of wolves. Poor wolves.”
During the launch, FKA took to Twitter to ask her followers how braids make them feel, as well as how they look after their natural hair. Responses ranged from users sharing that they felt connected to other black girls with braids to sharing that they felt a connection to their mother, who taught them how to braid hair.
According to Vogue, FKA shares that AVANTgarden is a way for her to express herself “without any rules or guidelines, with imagination and care.”
