The Internet definitely lost its chill when Selena Gomez arrived at the 2017 AMAs with a shocking new ‘do. Leaving her natural brunette days, the “Wolves” singer took the platinum blonde plunge and left room for her dark roots to peek through for a striking contrast. After seeing this, there’s no doubt that this will soon be every cool girl’s next hair peg. True enough, the hair colorists behind Gomez’s icy grunge hair, Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri, revealed on Instagram that they received tons of inquiries on the “Nirvana Blonde” that they just had to spill all the deets.
As any hairstylist would tell you, transitioning from brunette to blonde is no easy feat. It requires time, bleaches, and most of all, patience. So before you head to the nearest salon and show off your peg, you might want to take this into consideration: according to Capri, “it took 9 hours, about 300 foils, and 8 bowls of bleach, all with 2 stylist[s] working together simultaneously.” She even gave us a realistic glimpse of the crucial process, saying, “It was a nice long patient process of baby fine slices, then going back and opening each foil and reapplying, but done in one sitting.”
Dear Hairstylist, (for all of you who were asking) when your client brings in a picture of #NirvanaBlonde, you pull up this informational insta 😏 and let them know it took 9 hours, about 300 foils, and 8 bowls of bleach, all with 2 stylist working together simultaneously, (@nikkilee901 and myself). It was a nice long patient process of baby fine slices, then going back and opening each foil and reapplying, but done in one sitting. Anything is possible in one day, it just takes time, no other clients ha, and patience to maintain the integrity of the hair. ✨ And to all you clients that want this, hopefully this explains the process a bit better so you can now be VERY patient with your stylist. 😘 xx, R
It was a long process, however, the results clearly paid off. As seen on the AMAs red carpet, Gomez didn’t even need to put too much effort on her red carpet ensemble, as her hair alone did all the talking. Perhaps, this is one of our favorite benefits of getting a statement-making hair.
