Gucci transported us to another planet for its latest campaign. Back in April, the designer label teased us with clips featuring models dressed as aliens on Instagram with its hashtag #GucciAndBeyond. And now, they finally unveiled the sci-fi fashion ad project for Fall/Winter 2017 shot by Glen Luchford. The film is a self-referential explosion of color in its own version of Adult Swim shows and nostalgic motion pictures. It was brimming with vintage space pop culture references, as the brand drew inspiration from 50s and 60s cult classics like Forbidden Planet, Creature of the Black Lagoon, and Star Trek.
Gucci has definitely been influenced by the space genre. After all, their Fall 2017 collection was a co-ed presentation conceptualized from the juxtaposition of dreams and reality. It was sort of psychedelic in itself, like a passage to another dimension. Likewise, its runway show was set in a neon-lit plexiglass tunnel backed with Jóhann Jóhansson’s “The Rocket Builder,” track from the Netflix series, The OA.
