Just a week ago, Vans announced its collaboration with Chanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld. The news created quite the buzz online as streetwear enthusiasts are thrilled about the skate culture label being given a high fashion touch. Now, the wait is over and these new sleek kicks might actually make you ditch your trusty pair of white trainers.
The 12-piece collection is comprised of 6 new tweaks on the iconic Vans silhouettes inspired by Lagerfeld’s evolving design aesthetic. Laceless, platforms versions of the classic Sk8 Hi and Old Skool shoes ruled the range with motifs like K-quilted leather and boucle that brings a touch of Chanel’s signature tweed into the line.
For the apparel, minimalism still proves to be a timeless aesthetic as the line adheres to black and white for an assortment of graphic T-shirts, hoodies, bomber jackets, along with a black backpack with a quilted leather pattern and a checkerboard cap.
As many high-end labels fuse with the skate culture (think Louis Vuitton x Supreme), it’s no surprise that a fashion mastermind like Karl Lagerfeld would choose to dip into the same waters, as the skate aesthetic continues to be on the rise. “When I see the fashion world take references from skate trends or brands, I feel that they are intrigued by the fact that skaters are creatives that set their own rules and code,” Angie Dita, senior footwear designer for Vans, shares with Harper’s Bazaar. “There is something intriguing about how skateboarding symbolizes a sense of independence and non-conforming attitude that begins at their youth. They follow their own path.”
The Vans x Karl Lagerfeld caspule collection will officially be launched on the 7th of September worldwide. Pieces will range from $40 (P2000) to $300 (15,000) and will be available online at vans.com and karl.com
