For years, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has been holding a fundraising gala to support the Costume Institute’s annual exhibitions. It’s truly one of the most awaited events as it has been deemed as “the Superbowl of fashion”, where high profile Hollywood stars showcase their best couture style, guided by a chosen theme.
Last year, Rihanna reigned as the queen of the Met Gala in a stunning floral Comme des Garcons piece, which stayed true to its theme of honoring Rei Kawakubo. From classic to avant-garde, it’s absolutely enchanting to see each attendee come in their own interpretations of the theme. However, next year, it just might cause a stir.
Next year’s theme is “Fashion and Religion”. Designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Dolce & Gabbana, and Christopher Kane have been well-known for the concept of combining religion and fashion through referencing silhouettes, colorful palettes, and iconography with religious dresses and structures. For the past years, celebrities like Lady Gaga and Madonna have sparked debate for incorporating religious elements in their music videos.
The nature of the subject itself could incite fuss. Although it would undoubtedly make an interesting affair, next year will possibly be Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most controversial gala yet.
