NYFW: Reproductive Responsibility Will Never Go Out of Style
Now this is an awareness movement us Filipinas can actually benefit from. New York Fashion Week kicked off last Thursday, and you’ve probably seen (and will be seeing) bright pink pins on designers, supermodels, celebrities, and front-rowers. The magnetic pin, which says “Fashion Stands with Planned Parenthood,” is a joint effort between the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and the nonprofit reproductive health organization to counter President Trump’s attempts to de-fund it. Planned Parenthood provides sex education, helps in reproductive technology research, and protects reproductive rights. It’s also the biggest provider of reproductive health services, including abortion in the US. Spearheaded by designer Tracy Reese, more than 40 designers are joining the campaign, including Narciso Rodriguez, Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Zac Posen, Prabal Gurung. But perhaps most importantly, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour was spotted wearing the pin.

The pin comes with an instruction card on how participants can support Planned Parenthood. They are also encouraged to post on their IG pages using the hashtag #IStandwithPP. “Planned Parenthood is extremely important to me as a woman, and as someone who is interested in quality health care for all people,” said Tracy Reese, a designer who is on the board of directors for the C.F.D.A. and who spearheaded the campaign. “We go to Planned Parenthood for so many services: for H.I.V. testing, for cancer screening, for reproductive health care. We have to stand with them now and make sure they’re not defunded.”
