Off-White’s Virgil Abloh And Jenny Holzer Use Art To Make A Political Statement

Words by Steffi Solano

In today’s political turmoil, fashion has been utilizing its platform to contribute to progressive rhetoric and to stand up against regressive actions. Over the summer, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) unveiled Fashion Stands, a campaign with Planned Parenthood which features a special pin to support the critical health care that serves millions of citizens each year. A few months back, Proenza Schouler also released a film by Harley Weir with influential stars to also raise awareness.

Now, Off-White’s Virgil Abloh and Jenny Holzer are doing their part to support the organization and this time, they’re using art as a weapon. The duo created a limited edition collection of shirts that feature Planned Parenthood‘s mission statement on the back, and its front features Jenny Holzer’s iconic “truisms” piece: “Abuse of Power Comes As No Surprise.” Two other designs have a twist that read, “Abuse of Flower Comes As No Surprise.”

The shirts were commissioned by Sexy Beast, a non-profit organization that helps fundraise for creative communities in LA through events and collaborations. This is the second time Abloh and Holzer have teamed up; the two joined forces to create an orange t-shirt inscribed with the words, ”I’ll Never Forgive The Ocean” as the invitation to Off-White’s S/S ’18 show, in addition to a giant projection that the models walked on.

The limited edition tees are available today at for a $100 donation to Planned Parenthood LA.
