We’ve seen the talented Penelope Cruz portray a number of characters that have proven her versatility as an actress. However, her most recent role may be one of her biggest challenges yet: the complex Donatella Versace.
The Oscar winner is set to play the iconic fashion designer in the upcoming season of American Crime Story, which will focus on the murder of Gianni Versace. One may initially think that Cruz’s exotic look is the far from the blonde Versace, but behind-the-scenes photos on set and an interview for Interview magazine show us that with enough preparation, the actress was able to transform into her character.
Cruz admits that the transformation wasn’t easy: “I worked a lot with a dialogue coach to find the way that Donatella speaks, which is a little different from the way she spoke in the ’90s. The accent that she has, it’s Italian with a very international flavor—very rock ’n’ roll,” she says, adding, “I didn’t want to do an imitation of Donatella, or a caricature. I wanted to try to capture the essence of who she is.”
In addition to this, Cruz also revealed that she spoke a little with Donatella herself, to help get to know who she was playing. The actress also understood that some parts of the show may be sensitive to Donatella, so she wanted to be as respectful as possible. “This is a delicate story, because I’m playing someone who is alive, someone who lost her brother in a horrible way, and someone who still misses him very much 20 years later,” she shares.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story airs in 2018.
