Last April 4, 2013, Shu Uemura held an intimate celebration of its 30th Anniversary (and 10th in the Philippines) in Mango Tree, The Fort. The lavish décor and festivities were themed straight out of the brand’s philosophy: “art of beauty”. The venue was impeccable and present to add awe (and maybe send shivers) was none other than Kakuyasu Uchiide, international artistic director of Shu Uemura.
Uchiide paints the character “DREAM”
In a swift demo, the master showcased his soft-shadowing techniques as well as the icy-cool, saturated palettes of the Shu Uemura Iconic Collection (which will come out this July). His reputation as a revered artist was reinforced during the event, but it was with MEGA whom he revealed his down-to-earth side.
THE MAN BEHIND
Uchiide has been in the industry for 25 years and got his tutelage from Shu Uemura himself in 1988. The brand claims “Mr. Shu Uemura recognized the natural aptitude of Kakuyasu Uchiide and gave him special direct training,” leaving behind the distinct imprint of the Shu Uemura aesthetic in his skilled hands. In 2008, he was appointed International Artistic Director and has since been responsible for the creation and conceptualization of the brand’s boldest palettes and beautifully theatric lashes—a brand favorite aside from their cleansing oils and eyelash curler.
His unique vision of beauty propelled the brand into successful collaborations with artists such as Chinese film director Wong Kar Wai and Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld. A man of his talent knows no end, and we only imagine him and the Shu Uemura brand to go straight into history books as they continue to pioneer innovative products for the modern woman.
