Manolos have been a staple of fashion girls since Sex and the City came to fame in the 90s. Carrie Bradshaw has practically made the famed luxury shoe the holy grail in her style arsenal and has been identified with her name ever since. Manolo Blahnik has cemented his name as the king of women’s shoes in high fashion, with every shoe junkie and high heel enthusiast clamoring for his glittery stilettos. We’re all aware of his gorgeous selection of footwear but how much do we actually know about the man behind the name?
Fashion history aficionados rejoice as the luxury shoemaker’s documentary is coming out this month. The biopic is called “Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards” and will give us a deeper insight on how Blahnik began his journey to being the renowned designer that he is now. It will feature big names like Rihanna, Naomi Campbell, Andre Leon Talley, and Anna Wintour to share their experiences working with Blahnik. The Vogue editor-in-chief even states how Manolos have remained a mainstay in her style. “I can’t remember the last time I wore anybody else’s shoes. I just don’t even look at them,” Wintour says. “Myths are created around people the way they have been around Manolo, and I think he doesn’t really know how to deal with it.”
In addition, the film will feature interviews with designers Isaac Mizrahi and Paloma Picasso, as well as Candace Bushnell, creator of the original Manolo-obsessed Sex and the City squad. The fashion crowd of social media have been buzzing about the anticipated documentary and it’s no doubt that everyone who owns a coveted Manolo will appreciate the shoes even more after seeing Blahnik’s passionate testament to his craft.
“When I don’t like something, I just give hell,” the designer explains. “My joy in life is spending time in the factories, you see. It is quite sad to say that, but this is the only thing I love.”
Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards opens September 29 and will hold premieres in New York City on September 15 and September 21 in Los Angeles.
