You might have already seen people posting photos of a semicolon on social media–whether it be a simple image of it or a tattoo on a person’s wrist (à la Selena Gomez).
Instead of being a mere punctuation mark, however, there is actually a much deeper meaning behind it.
Project Semicolon is a non-profit movement to present hope to those who are struggling with depression, suicidal thoughts, addiction, and self-injury.
In Project Semicolon’s website, they stated, “A semicolon represents a sentence the author could have ended, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.”
This is a simple yet profound reminder, especially if it seems as if society gets the condition wrong at times. If you or anyone you know is struggling with depression or any other mental illness, it is important to remember that we aren’t alone.
