It’s no secret that top knots are the quick fix to hiding a bad hair day (or just unwashed locks). Anyone can literally look fresh in seconds after creating this ‘do. But while it’s an everyday favourite, this updo proves to be a chameleon over time, as stars have been taking the hair-raising style to the red carpet–we’ve seen Zendaya recently whisk her fluffy curls into an easy top knot for a black tie affair, and we also spotted model Emily Ratajkowski sporting the classic look on the red carpet. That in mind, how can it look less expected and far from basic these days?
Last night at MTV’s Video Music Awards, Victoria’s Secret model Joan Smalls arrived in a not-so-head-turning tuxedo dress, but she clearly stepped it up–beauty-wise–by giving the top knot a new twist. The model brought the drama and sophistication to her ultra-twisted, ornamental updo, which is probably the tallest top knot we’ve seen so far. The key to achieving the look is to keep your locks smooth and shiny (thanks to a dose of hair oil) for a sleek effect. Pull your hair up into a slicked back, high ponytail and secure it with an elastic. Next, twist it around and around until it begins to roll onto itself. Keep it in place with safety pins and spritz on a bit of hairspray, then it’s good to go!
